On 2nd January, 1915, the 2nd Essex battalion of 12 Brigade, 4th Division moved into trenches near Le Touquet, a small hamlet near Ploegsteert, in Belgium where they remained for most of the month and through into February with companies rotating between the front line and billets in reserve. On 17th February the battalion diary recorded that it was a quiet day with only two men killed and another two wounded. Edward Palmer was the man killed. That afternoon, the enemy shelled the potato field behind the battalion’s line and no doubt hampered arrangements for supper. At some stage during the day Sidney Mann was killed. |
